Where Bloomsday begins
Sandycove. The Martello Tower. The Forty Foot. Joyce made this corner of Dublin the opening scene of Ulysses. On June 16th, we raise a glass to that.

A pub in Joyce country
Fitzgerald's sits near Sandycove Martello Tower, where the first chapter of Ulysses unfolds
"Dullkey Downlairy and Bleakrooky tramaline"
James Joyce, Finnegans Wake (FW 40.29-30)
The Dalkey, Dun Laoghaire and Blackrock tramline - the old number 8 route that closed in 1949 - ran right past the front door of Fitzgerald's. Joyce would have known it well.
Joyce also worked on Dalkey Avenue in 1904, teaching at Clifton School - the model for Mr Deasy's school in the "Nestor" episode of Ulysses. And he gave Dún Laoghaire harbour one of his best lines: "Kingstown pier... a disappointed bridge."
